Overview
Regulatory updates in building design and construction standards are essential for enhancing structural safety, resilience, and energy efficiency. However, transitioning to newer code editions—such as the International Building Code (IBC) cycles—frequently introduces economic friction, requiring structural modifications, adjusted material specifications, and revised construction methodologies that directly influence project budgets across the industry.
Led by Dr. Raymond Issa, this comprehensive study evaluated the financial and regulatory implications associated with structural and material code changes across upcoming code cycles. Contributing specialized cost-impact analyses, this research examined how prescriptive code modifications alter baseline material quantities, labor requirements, and overall capital expenditures for typical building typologies.
This project supports public agencies, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies like the Florida Building Commission in understanding the economic trade-offs of code compliance. Providing empirical cost data assists policymakers in balancing safety enhancements with economic feasibility, guiding future code development and helping construction professionals plan more accurate financial forecasts.
